Signs You Have a Circuit Breaker Problem

These symptoms indicate your breakers need professional attention — don't just keep resetting them.

Breaker Trips Repeatedly

A breaker that trips more than once a month is telling you something — the circuit is overloaded, there's a wiring fault, or the breaker itself is failing.

Breaker Won't Stay Reset

If a breaker immediately trips again after resetting, there's likely a short circuit or ground fault in the wiring. Do not force it — call an electrician.

Buzzing or Crackling Sounds

Audible buzzing from your panel indicates arcing — electrical current jumping across a gap. This is a fire hazard that needs immediate attention.

Visible Damage or Discoloration

Melted plastic, burn marks, or rust on breakers means they've overheated. Damaged breakers cannot be trusted to protect your circuits.

Outlets or Switches Feel Warm

Warm outlets downstream of a breaker can mean the breaker isn't tripping when it should. The breaker's job is to cut power before wires overheat.

Home Is 25+ Years Old

Older breakers wear out over time and may not trip reliably. Modern AFCI and GFCI breakers provide fire and shock protection that older ones simply can't.

Recognize any of these warning signs? Don't wait until it becomes an emergency.

Circuit Breaker Services Across Ventura County

DCP Electric provides expert circuit breaker installation, replacement, and repair throughout Ventura County — including Ventura, Oxnard, Camarillo, Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, Moorpark, and Ojai. We also serve Santa Barbara, Goleta, Carpinteria, Malibu, and Westlake Village.

Circuit breakers are your home's first line of defense against electrical fires and equipment damage. When a circuit draws more power than it should, the breaker is designed to trip and cut the power before wires overheat. But breakers wear out over time — especially in older Ventura County homes where the original breakers have been protecting circuits for 30, 40, or even 50 years.

California's electrical code has evolved significantly in recent years. AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) breakers are now required in virtually all living spaces to prevent electrical fires caused by arcing. GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) breakers are required in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, outdoor areas, and anywhere near water. If your home was built before these requirements, upgrading to modern breakers dramatically improves safety.

We stock breakers for all major panel brands found in Ventura County homes — Square D, Siemens, Eaton, GE, Cutler-Hammer, and Murray. If you have a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel with known breaker defects, we recommend a full panel replacement rather than just replacing individual breakers.

What Our Customers Say

Had a breaker that kept tripping in our kitchen every time we ran the microwave and toaster together. DCP Electric came out the same day, diagnosed the overloaded circuit, and installed a dedicated 20-amp line for the microwave. Problem solved — no more trips.

Common Circuit Breaker Questions

Repeated tripping usually means the circuit is overloaded (too many devices), there's a short circuit in the wiring, or the breaker itself is faulty. Sometimes it's as simple as too many appliances on one circuit. We diagnose the root cause and fix it properly rather than just resetting the breaker.
GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) breakers protect against electrical shock by detecting current leaks to ground — required in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor areas. AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) breakers protect against electrical fires by detecting dangerous arcing — now required in bedrooms, living rooms, and most habitable spaces.
We strongly advise against DIY breaker work. Working inside an electrical panel exposes you to live power that can cause serious injury or death. Additionally, using the wrong breaker type or amp rating creates fire hazards. A licensed electrician ensures safe, code-compliant installation.
A standard breaker replacement typically runs $150-$300 including parts and labor. GFCI and AFCI breakers cost more ($200-$400) due to the specialized components. We provide upfront pricing before starting any work — no surprise charges.
If your home has Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or Pushmatic breakers, they should be replaced immediately due to known safety issues. Other signs include breakers that won't stay reset, visible damage or discoloration, or a panel that's more than 25-30 years old.

Breaker issues are a safety concern. Let's get it sorted.
