Signs Your Home Needs Rewiring

Outdated wiring is one of the leading causes of electrical fires. Watch for these warning signs.

Two-Prong Outlets

If your home still has two-prong (ungrounded) outlets, the wiring predates modern safety standards. Without grounding, you're at higher risk for shock and equipment damage.

Burning Smell or Discolored Outlets

Scorch marks around outlets or a persistent burning smell indicate wiring that's overheating inside your walls — a serious fire hazard that demands immediate inspection.

Flickering Lights Throughout the House

Isolated flickering might be a bad bulb, but widespread flickering across multiple rooms points to deteriorating wiring connections or an overloaded system.

Buzzing or Sizzling Sounds

If you hear buzzing from outlets, switches, or inside walls, current is likely arcing across damaged or loose wiring. This is a fire risk that needs professional diagnosis.

Aluminum or Knob-and-Tube Wiring

Homes built before 1950 may have knob-and-tube wiring; 1960s-70s homes often have aluminum. Both have known hazards and most insurance companies require replacement.

Frequent Blown Fuses or Tripped Breakers

If multiple circuits struggle to carry their load, the wiring itself may be undersized for modern use. A home that relied on a few circuits in the 1960s can't safely power today's appliances.

Recognize any of these warning signs? Don't wait until it becomes an emergency.

Electrical Wiring Services in Ventura County

DCP Electric provides professional wiring installation and repair throughout Ventura County — including Ventura, Oxnard, Camarillo, Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, and Moorpark — as well as Santa Barbara County and parts of Los Angeles County.

Ventura County has a wide range of housing stock, from post-war bungalows in Ventura and Oxnard to tract homes built during the 1970s construction boom in Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley. Many of these homes still have their original wiring — and while the wiring may have been fine when installed, 40-60 years of use takes a toll on wire insulation, connections, and capacity.

We see a particularly high demand for rewiring in older neighborhoods in Ventura, where knob-and-tube wiring and aluminum wiring are still common. These wiring types pose known fire hazards, and many insurance companies in California now require updated wiring before issuing or renewing homeowner's policies. We handle complete whole-house rewiring with minimal wall damage, working through attics and crawlspaces to route new copper wiring cleanly.

For homeowners planning remodels — whether it's a kitchen renovation in Camarillo, a garage conversion in Oxnard, or a home office addition in Westlake Village — we install new circuits, dedicated 240V lines, and structured low-voltage wiring for data and entertainment systems. Every project includes proper permitting through your local building department and passes inspection on the first try.

What Our Customers Say

We needed our 1965 Ventura home completely rewired — the insurance company wouldn't renew our policy with aluminum wiring. DCP Electric rewired the entire house in four days with minimal drywall damage. They even added dedicated circuits for our new EV charger. Fantastic work.

Common Wiring Questions

Warning signs include frequently tripping breakers, flickering lights, discolored outlets, burning smells, two-prong outlets (no ground), aluminum wiring (common in 1960s-70s homes), or knob-and-tube wiring (pre-1950s homes). If your home is over 40 years old and hasn't been rewired, we recommend a professional inspection.
A typical 3-bedroom home takes 3-5 days for a complete rewire. Larger homes or homes with difficult access (finished walls, limited attic space) may take longer. We provide a detailed timeline during your estimate and work to minimize disruption to your daily routine.
Usually not. We work room by room and maintain power to most of the house during the process. There will be periods without power in specific areas, and there may be some dust from opening walls, but most families stay home throughout the project.
Aluminum wiring itself isn't inherently dangerous, but the connections are. Aluminum expands and contracts differently than copper, causing connections to loosen over time. This creates hot spots and fire hazards. We can either rewire with copper or install approved aluminum-to-copper connectors (COPALUM or AlumiConn).
A dedicated circuit serves only one appliance or area, with its own breaker in the panel. This prevents overloads and is required by code for many appliances — refrigerators, dishwashers, microwaves, washers/dryers, EV chargers, and HVAC systems. If an appliance trips a shared circuit, it likely needs a dedicated one.

Old or damaged wiring isn't worth the risk. We'll take a look.
