Signs You Need Outlet or Switch Service

These issues may seem minor but can indicate serious wiring problems behind the wall.

Outlets Feel Warm

A warm outlet or switch plate means wiring behind it is overheating. This is a fire hazard — especially if accompanied by discoloration or a burning smell.

Sparks When Plugging In

Occasional small sparks can be normal, but large, frequent, or colored sparks indicate a worn outlet, loose wiring, or a short circuit that needs attention.

Plugs Fall Out of Outlets

If plugs don't stay seated in an outlet, the internal contacts are worn out. Loose connections generate heat and can cause arcing — time for a replacement.

Two-Prong Outlets

Two-prong outlets lack a ground wire, leaving you unprotected against shock and unable to use three-prong devices safely. Adapters don't solve the underlying problem.

Dead Outlets or Switches

An outlet or switch that stops working could mean a tripped GFCI, a loose wire connection, or a failed device. We diagnose and fix the root cause.

No Tamper-Resistant Outlets

If you have young children and your outlets don't have built-in shutters (TR outlets), upgrading is an important safety improvement required by current code.

Outlet & Switch Services in Ventura County

DCP Electric installs, replaces, and repairs electrical outlets and switches throughout Ventura County, Santa Barbara County, and parts of Los Angeles County. We serve Ventura, Oxnard, Camarillo, Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, Moorpark, Ojai, Santa Barbara, Malibu, and Westlake Village.

Outlets and switches are the most-used components in your electrical system, and they wear out over time. In older Ventura County homes — particularly those built before the 1970s — we frequently find ungrounded two-prong outlets, missing GFCI protection in kitchens and bathrooms, and original switches that have been toggled tens of thousands of times. Replacing these with modern, grounded, tamper-resistant outlets and updated switches improves both safety and convenience.

One of our most popular services is adding outlets where homeowners need them most. Many older homes in Ventura and Oxnard have too few outlets, forcing residents to rely on power strips and extension cords — a common fire hazard. We add outlets in home offices, kitchens, garages, and outdoor living spaces, running new wiring cleanly through existing walls. We also install 240V outlets for EV chargers, dryers, ranges, and workshop equipment.

For homeowners looking to modernize, we install USB-equipped outlets, smart switches compatible with Alexa and Google Home, and programmable dimmer switches. These upgrades add convenience and can increase your home's value — a worthwhile investment whether you're staying or planning to sell.

What Our Customers Say

We had DCP Electric add outlets in our home office, replace all the old two-prong outlets in our 1960s Ventura home with grounded GFCI outlets, and install a 240V outlet in the garage for our EV charger. Everything was done in one day. Very professional and fair pricing.

Outlet & Switch Questions

Two-prong outlets were common before the 1960s and lack a ground wire for safety. Without grounding, you're at higher risk for electrical shock and damage to sensitive electronics. We can upgrade to grounded three-prong outlets by running a ground wire or installing GFCI-protected outlets as a code-approved alternative.
California code requires GFCI protection in kitchens (all countertop outlets), bathrooms, garages, unfinished basements, laundry areas, outdoor outlets, and any outlet within 6 feet of a water source. If your home is missing GFCI outlets in these areas, it's both a safety risk and a code violation.
Yes! We run new wiring from an existing circuit or your panel to add outlets anywhere. We route wires through walls, attics, or crawlspaces to minimize visible work. Most single-outlet additions take 1-2 hours.
Tamper-resistant (TR) outlets have spring-loaded shutters that only open when equal pressure is applied to both slots simultaneously — like inserting a plug. This prevents children from inserting objects into the outlet. TR outlets have been required by code in all new residential installations since 2008.
A standard outlet replacement typically costs $100-$175. GFCI outlets run $150-$250 due to the specialized components. Adding a completely new outlet where none exists costs $200-$400 depending on wiring distance and access. We provide exact pricing upfront.
